This annual event, while fundamentally centered around the world of fashion, has blossomed into something far greater than a mere showcase of clothing and design. It has rapidly positioned itself as one of the most formidable platforms for fashion innovation and culture in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Kolwezi, often recognized as the heart of the DRC’s rich copper and cobalt mining belt, is evolving into a dynamic hub that celebrates cultural heritage, artistic expression, and a myriad of economic opportunities all intertwined through the lens of fashion. This year’s event attracted both local and international designers who brought their unique perspectives and aesthetics to the runway. Additionally, talented local artists and members of the diaspora joined forces to infuse the event with their creativity, elevating it beyond a simple fashion show into a cultural phenomenon.
The four-day event showcased a vibrant mix of creativity that emphasized the beauty, diversity, and rich heritage of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Attendees, including designers, artists, models, and fashion enthusiasts, contributed to the lively atmosphere through fashion, celebrating cultural fusion and artistic collaboration. Kolwezi Fashion Week
KFW is an annual international fashion event held in Kolwezi, the capital city of Lualaba in the southern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Established to highlight the work of Congolese designers, creatives, artisans, and industry leaders, the event features a diverse program of runway shows, exhibitions, and cultural experiences over several days. This initiative not only puts Kolwezi and the DRC on the global fashion map but also plays a crucial role in showcasing the vibrant creativity of the younger generation while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Kolwezi.
And at the center of this remarkable initiative is an exceptional individual whose vision and determination have been crucial to bringing Kolwezi Fashion Week to life. Without her steadfast commitment and serious approach to leveraging fashion as a means of representation, economic development, and creativity, this event would not have come to fruition.

The Woman behind Kolwezi Fashion Week
Marie Natacha Masuka is the founder of Kolwezi Fashion Week, where she serves as the executive director and president. However, her talents extend far beyond this role; she is also a biographer and cinematographer. These two passions highlight her deep love for creativity and storytelling. One notable project of hers is the short film series titled “Under the Blessed Table,” which tells the story of her mother, Fifi Masuka Saini, the current governor of Lualaba province.
Her journey to founding Kolwezi Fashion Week began with a simple concept she shared with those around her. In her last video, which took viewers backstage at the first edition of Kolwezi Fashion Week, she highlighted the challenges young people face when trying to bring their ideas to life. She expressed that being young and having innovative ideas can feel daunting, as people often struggle to take you seriously solely because of your age. However, she didn't let that deter her from her clear vision: to showcase Kolwezi, a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as a hub of creativity, heritage, and entrepreneurship.
For its second edition, Kolwezi fashion week put heritage front and center, with the main theme "Heritage in the Light." The event showcased heritage as a celebration of freedom, tradition, diversity, and textiles. With an amazing selection of local artisans, designers, creatives, and stylists, the event transformed fashion into a platform for rich artistry, cultural heritage, and economic growth.

As a fashion enthusiast, I had the pleasure of browsing the stunning, culturally insightful images from Kolwezi Fashion Week. As a fellow citizen of the DRC, I felt immense pride and excitement to see my culture showcased in such an authentic way. Whether on the runway or the red carpet, the theme of duality was evident, with cultural heritage and modernity harmoniously intertwined rather than competing.
What truly captivated my attention were the four themes associated with each of the four days: Heritage of Freedom, Heritage of Tradition, Heritage Without Borders, and Heritage of the Fabric. Each day provided an opportunity to explore a unique aspect of heritage.
The Heritage of Freedom was a tribute to courage and self-determination, a freedom that stems not from dissociation but rather from the ability to express one’s culture and heritage without limits.
The Heritage of Tradition showcased garments that celebrated traditional rituals that bring communities together, through the lens of wedding ceremonies, emphasizing cultural richness, family bonds, and garments passed down from generation to generation.
Heritage Without Borders served as a platform for exploration and diversity, blending styles influenced by colonial legacies with elements of cultural heritage to showcase the beauty of this amalgamation. highlighting connections that transcend borders and celebrating exchange, collaboration, and cultural dialogue.
The Heritage of the Fabric transformed fashion into a medium for storytelling, artistry, and beauty by reimagining wax textiles and turning the city of Kolwezi's mining heritage into a contemporary textile narrative.
Four days of exploration, creative expression, artistry, and the celebration of heritage - that is why Kolwezi fashion week is more than a runway event; it is a cultural platform where fashion is the leading force carrying the culture, legacy, creativity, and artistry of a nation with precision, excellence, and diversity.

Among them were 20 locally based Congolese designers and 5 international African designers. The event also highlighted the contributions of diaspora and African creatives and artists from various backgrounds.
The participants, whether designers or guests, are the driving force behind the event, each bringing their own individuality and unique perspectives. This reinforces one of the core messages of Kolwezi Fashion Week: “diversity.”

With 25 designers on the list, each designer delivered a collection based on the theme, turning clothing into a tool for interpretation and expression. The designs were beautifully crafted, rich in textures and fabrics, compelling in their colors, and striking in their silhouettes. It felt more like watching a short film on what culture and heritage can look like through garments rather than a runway show. The artistry in the mise en beaute was impeccable, with hairstyles that enhanced the narrative while also celebrating the heritage of African hairstyles, which is an important aspect of our culture and ancestry.
The set served as the perfect backdrop for the extravagant stage, illuminating the atmosphere of each show. The air was filled with the enchanting sounds of a live music performance, skillfully curated to evoke emotions and set the tone for the unfolding spectacle. The vibrant colors, dramatic lighting, and intricate props worked in harmony to create an enchanting environment that transported the audience into a world of creativity and imagination. Every detail was thoughtfully orchestrated to enhance the runway presentations, allowing the powerful messages conveyed by the designs to resonate deeply with viewers. It was an exquisite fusion of art and fashion, where every aspect from the pulsating rhythm of the music to the visual splendor of the surroundings came together to create an unforgettable experience.

THE RED CARPET: A visual essay of fashion
The moment before the runway show begins is akin to a red carpet event, where striking silhouettes represent both fashion and cultural heritage. Each look serves as a map, retracing one's culture and background. The guests embraced the theme with remarkable creativity and passion, making it impossible to overlook the effort and dedication evident in each outfit.
One of my favorite red carpet moments occurred on Day 4 during the "Heritage of Textile" collaboration between Wax Bazaar and Kolwezi Fashion Week. This segment stood out as the most compelling in terms of storytelling. The guests wore looks made with a wax textile in cobalt blue and malachite green, creating a narrative inspired by the city’s mining heritage and its aerial landscape.
The carpet was a vibrant tapestry of design that seamlessly blended elements of heritage and modernity. It showcased an exquisite combination of luxurious textiles and contemporary fabrics, such as denim, resulting in stunning pieces that radiate a modern flair while honoring cultural significance. The variety in silhouette, ranging from tailored to flowing, was especially intriguing, and the thoughtful arrangement drew the eye, making it a striking focal point that tells a story of tradition meeting innovation.
The second edition of Kolwezi Fashion Week proved that the true measure of a fashion event extends far beyond the runway. Every collection carries echoes of local identity, reminding audiences that fashion becomes most compelling when it reflects the people and traditions from which it emerges.
Yet perhaps the event’s greatest achievement lay behind the scenes. Kolwezi Fashion Week continued to strengthen the industry's creative infrastructure, transforming fashion into a catalyst for entrepreneurship and economic opportunity. Designers worked alongside artisans, models, photographers, makeup artists, hairstylists, stylists, set designers, production teams, and countless other creative professionals whose expertise brought the vision to life.
